Communication Breakdown: Look Who's Talking & Who's Just Texting
Speaker(s): Caesar Vielmas
This session will focus on the evolution of communication and interaction methods over the past 20 years. Caesar will discuss the rapid evolution of the many new ways (tactics) we've used to communicate with each other and reach consumers. He’ll fast-forward quickly to the present time to identify constants (what hasn’t changed) over time establishing the fundamental rule for communication past and present. He will dissect the significant gaps within Gen X’ers, identify potential overlaps in Gen X with Gen Y, and discuss what it all means to us, as marketers. The Gen Ys are growing up, they are part of our agencies, (our companies); their marketing ideas are clearly very different from ours even in cases where there is a very narrow age difference. Does the new talent understand how to reach baby boomers? What do we all need to know about Gen Z? There will be a lively review to understand your audience and align communication tactics that match the audience. What are we trying to do in the world of Facebook, Hi5, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogs, Flicker, SMS (texts) and smart phones? MySpace - who? My 10 year-old wants a phone not a laptop? (The more things change, the more they stay the same.)
Is this social engagement or the beginning of social disengagement? Has Social Media changed the meaning of “social interaction”? Caesar will address the challenges marketers face as different generations embrace disparate forms of communication, and what marketers can do to widen our reach and remain relevant to different age groups---who currently may or may not be "speaking" to one another.
